Rabbi Linda's Blog: May Graduations Celebrations

May 2024

This month we will celebrate the graduation/ordination of our rabbinic intern, Aya Baron. Aya graduates the RRC on May 19th. We will mark her upcoming transition to rabbi at services at BI on May 4th. Two weeks later, on May 18th, we will honor and celebrate BI members who are graduating High School, also at Shabbat morning services.

At this tender and difficult time in the world and for our people it is important to mark and to savor and to celebrate. Do you have something you wish to celebrate at BI? Perhaps with an aliyah on Shabbat morning, or by sponsoring an oneg Friday night or a Kiddush on Shabbat morning? Let's lift each other up by the power of celebration.

Tot Shabbat is Going Strong

Since last fall we’ve met on the 2nd Friday of every month, coming together to sing, color, play, eat, tell stories and celebrate Shabbat together as a community.

Over the past 6 months we’ve had 30 families participate, with about 5‐7 families per month.

Many thanks to our volunteers and our rabbinic interns, who make it all possible:  Aya Baron, Lynn Cashell, Nora Chernov, Alicia DePaolo, Elaine Feldman, Alisa Herman‐Liu, Lydia Kendis, Randi Raskin Nash, Alan Ross, Kathy Trow. And of course Rabbi Nathan and Rabbi Linda. Special thanks to student rabbi Koach Baruch Frazier, who joined us for our February Tot Shabbat celebration.
If you’d like to attend or help out at a future Tot Shabbat please reach out to Jackie Gelman.

Upcoming dates: 5/10

Rabbi Nathan's Blog: Israeli Memorial/Independence Days

May 2024

In the Israeli calendar Israeli Memorial Day and Independence Day are consecutive commemorations. This year they fall on May 13 and May 14 respectively. This is not accidental. The cost of Israeli lives in its struggle for independence in 1948, about 1% of its population at the time, linked the loss and celebration, each as inextricable pieces of a whole. Much like any Jewish ceremony ‐ like breaking a glass at a wedding ‐ it is often our nature as Jews to connect sadness to joy, perhaps as a way of grounding us and giving us new perspectives.

I have been in Israel during this time of commemoration, and two years ago...
